We take electrical defect notices so seriously that we consider it an emergency repair. If you need us any time of the night or day, we’ll repair the fault correctly and make sure you’re able to remove the notice.

What Is An Electrical Defect Notice?

Endeavour Energy or Ausgrid will issue a notice if your electrical connection or set-up fails to comply with the safety standards. The NSW Electricity Supply Act 1995 has strict conditions for the maintenance and supply of electricity.

Distributors whose networks ignore code will face closure, and if the provider feels that your electrical connections pose a safety hazard to the rest of the grid, you will receive a notice.

There are several reasons for these electrical defect situations, including:

  • Adding a storey to a building
  • Installing a clothesline or antennae too near to the mains
  • Pool construction
  • Landscaping too close to service lines

If you have already received a defect notification, call Calibre Connect so that we can address it immediately.

Who Issues Electrical Defect Notices In Sydney, NSW?

  • Ausgrid covers Sydney Metropolitan, Hunter Valley, and Central Coast in New South Wales.
  • Endeavour Energy covers Sydney Greater West, Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains, South Coast, and Illawarra.

These companies are the only two entitled to issue such notices in New South Wales. After giving the notice, an inspector will arrive to ensure that you’ve followed up on the matter. If the inspection finds you are still non-compliant, the company will stop power to your property.

The auditor may give you a set time to fix the issue, but it is not obliged to warn you of upcoming inspections. If the company arrives to see that you’ve done nothing about the areas of concern, it might decide to disconnect you sooner.

It is best to be prepared. Call Calibre Connect as soon as possible and make sure your audit is successful.

Electrical Defect Notice Removal

The owner is the one who must ensure that the property is compliantβ€”the liability stops with you.  If you’re renting, you will need to forward these letters to the landlord immediately.

The notice will state the nature of the defect and explain potential remedies. It will also give you a timeframe in which to complete any repairs.

While it may seem simple enough to make the fixes yourself, any electrical work requires a qualified electrician. It’s essential to call in a Level 2 electrician as quickly as possible.

At Calibre Connect, we ensure that our work meets all the safety standards so that you never have to see one of those dreaded defect notices again. Don’t risk having your lights switched offβ€”Call us at (02) 8898 0200.

Electrical Defect Notices – FAQs

Hire a licensed electrician in Sydney who complies with AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules. Regularly inspect and maintain your electrical installations, ensuring all work follows the latest Australian standards and uses approved materials. Avoid DIY electrical work to reduce risks of defects and notices.

Hazards include exposed or damaged wiring, missing or faulty safety switches, unsafe switchboards, low-hanging power lines, poor earthing, and installations near water or damp areas that don’t meet safety rules.

Common reasons include faulty wiring, damaged insulation, outdated or unsafe switchboards, missing safety switches (RCDs), overhead power line hazards, and unlicensed electrical work. These issues pose fire or electrocution risks and often violate AS/NZS 3000 standards.

It’s recommended to have a licensed electrician inspect your home’s electrical system every 3–5 years or after any major electrical work, to ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards and avoid defect notices.

Typically, you have 21 days from the notice date to have defects repaired by a licensed electrician. Failure to comply can result in power disconnection by the distributor until repairs meet safety standards.

Yes. AS/NZS 3000 mandates enhanced protection in wet or damp areas like bathrooms and laundries, including appropriate earthing, RCDs, and waterproof fittings to prevent electric shock.

Yes. You can hire any licensed electrician in Sydney to fix defects. The new electrician must comply with AS/NZS 3000 standards and provide certification upon completion to satisfy the distributor’s requirements.

RCDs detect earth faults and quickly cut power to prevent electrocution and fire. Since 2019, they are mandatory for all domestic final sub-circuits in Sydney homes, significantly reducing defect risks related to safety switches.
